Caravan - Bill Halley & His Comets

Este pionero del Rock´n roll y una de sus figuras más importantes tiene en su haber el que quizás sea el repertorio más popular del citado estilo: Rock Around the Clock; See You Later, Alligator; Shake, Rattle And Roll y un largo etc.; quizás solo igualado por el legado que dejó Chuck Berry. 

El tema original es un clásico compuesto por Juan Tizol y Duke Ellington (Sir Duke que diría Stevie Wonder) y que popularizó y convirtió en un standard de jazz la banda del propio Ellington y muchos otros artistas: Art Tatum, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Wes Montgomery y cualquiera que te puedas imaginar; que por cierto tiene letra pero rara vez se usa.

Por cierto, me acabo de acordar que la virtuosa Hiromi Uehara tiene una versión (ver aquí) hipervitaminada que quita el hipo. Atención a la guitarra sin trastes.

Hazy Shade of Winter - Simon & Garfunkel

El que una vez fuera el dúo Tom & Jerry y una de las parejas más influyentes de la música popular reinó en los 60 con temas como este Hazy Shade of Winter, que cuenta con algunas versiones de renombre como la realizada por The Bangles (un cañonazo).

Normalmente, Paul Simon se encargaba de las composiciones, las guitarras y las voces de acompañamiento (más graves) y Art Garfunkel interpretaba la voz principal y melódica.

En su corta carrera de 6 años tuvieron tiempo para realizar hasta bandas sonoras, como la de El graduado que fue todo un éxito (atentos a las guitarras en Mrs. Robinson) y disfrutaron de un reconocimiento masivo gracias a temas como The Sounds of Silence, The Boxer, I am a Rock, Cecilia, If I Could, Bridge Over Troubled Water, America y algunos otros.

Vangelis

Fallecíó Vangelis, pionero de la música electrónica y músico versátil y visionario donde los haya.

Entre los músicos especializados en sintetizadores y sonidos vanguardistas goza de un status divino. Un mesías. 

Aunque sus primeras andaduras musicales estuvieran más cerca del rock progresivo con el prestigioso grupo Aphrodite´s Child del que también formaba parte Demis Roussos (hablamos de finales de los 60) rápidamente se posicionó como autor de prestigio de bandas sonoras, entre otras cosas gracias a la solemnidad de muchas de sus obras, y se le asoció a un sonido espacial y futurista gracias a sus trabajos en Blade Runner o la saga Cosmos que dirigía y presentaba Carl Sagan.

Recibió un Oscar por la música de Carros de Fuego.

He conocido recientemente a este fulano y me ha sorprendido gratamente. Me parece una excelente actualización del mejor Soul y un artista como la copa de un pino. De hecho, ha arrasado en la última edición de los premios Grammy.

Farther Along - Spirit

Spirit fue una banda californiana asociada al rock y la psicodelia (como muchas bandas californianas de finales de los 60) aunque su sonido tenía muchas otras influencias. La banda la formaron inicialmente Randy California guitarra y voz, Mark Andes al bajo, Jay Ferguson percusión y voces, Ed Cassidy a la batería y John Locke a los teclados. 

Hace unos años volvieron a tener mucha notoriedad en la prensa especializada por el presunto plagio de la canción Taurus por parte de Led Zeppelin en su canción Stairway to Heaven, que finalmente y tras largos litigios no se consideró plagio por parte de la banda británica.
