Heart of Gold - Neil Young

Tema mítico dónde los haya y una de mis canciones de folk/rock preferidas. 

Temazo.

Perteneciente al también mítico Harvest del músico canadiense, Heart of Gold fue número uno durante mucho tiempo y es quizás la canción más conocida del experimentado músico, que formó parte de bandas como Buffalo Springfield y fue el Young de Crosby, Stills, Nash y Young.

Maestría al ejecutar la guitarra con unos sencillos pero eficaces acordes y maestría con la armónica.

Según parece, Bob Dylan, que era o es amigo de Young, decía esto cuando se lanzó el tema:

“I used to hate it when it came on the radio. I always liked Neil Young, but it bothered me every time I listened to ‘Heart of Gold.’ I think it was up at number one for a long time, and I’d say, ‘Shit, that’s me. If it sounds like me, it should as well be me’,”

Sinead O´Connor

Ayer falleció la cantante que popularizó Nothing Compares to You, tema compuesto por Prince (al que ya dediqué una entrada) y cuya prometedora carrera se vio interrumpida cuando decidió romper una foto del Papa en directo: ver vídeo.

Aunque después disfrutó de relativa notoriedad y prestigio, no volvió a repetir el éxito de esta canción.

Ordinary World - Duran Duran

Escuchar esta canción me lleva directamente a la época de su lanzamiento, unos lejanos años 90, en concreto al 92, que en España se vivieron intensamente con las Olimpiadas de Barcelona, la Expo de Sevilla y algún que otro sarao...

Aunque no fuera seguidor del grupo si que conocía muchos de sus temas, pues Duran Duran eran una banda muy famosa por aquel entonces. 

En cualquier caso, yo no asociaba esta canción al sonido de la banda, que era bastante novedoso dentro de los cánones del pop con mucho teclado, algo de funky y otras cosas. Eran los abanderados junto a Spandau Ballet de aquello que se llamó New Romantics, que por cierto, tan cuidada estética se gestó, entre otros lugares, en un club llamado The Blitz que frecuentaban los que formaban o luego formarían grupos como Visage, Spandau Ballet, Ultravox, The Human League o Culture Club y cuyo líder espiritual era nada menos que David Bowie.

Rendezvous – UK

 Composición perteneciente al segundo álbum del grupo británico liderado por John Wetton, quién formó UK tras el parón de King Crimson en los 70 junto a Bill Bruford, Eddie Jobson y Alan Holdsworth.

En este tema ya habían cambiado la formación del primero disco con la marcha de Bruford, quien montó una banda con su mismo nombre a la que se sumó  Holdsworth, y añadieron al baterista Terry Bozzio que había tocado con Frank Zappa.

El teclado que sustenta todo el tema junto a la línea de bajo y la voz de Wetton me parecen una maravilla y, aunque es un tema que se podría considerar rock progresivo, no llega a ser tan grandilocuente ni se hace largo o pesado, al menos., ese es mi parecer.

Burt Bacharach

El pasado febrero falleció Burt Bacharach, uno de los más grandes compositores de música popular que junto a Hal David crearon innumerables e inolvidables éxitos.

Su lista de canciones es inabarcable y la calidad de sus temas es asombrosa. Sus canciones han sido cantadas por Tom Jones, The Carpenters, Aretha Franklin, Gene Pitney, Dusty Springfield, Christopher Cross y un larguísimo etc. (en concreto, sus canciones fueron grabadas por más de 1.000 artistas). Incluyendo a Dionne Warwick, que fue su principal musa.

Jeff Beck

El pasado 10 de enero falleció uno de los más grandes guitarristas eléctricos de todos los tiempos. Innovador, arrollador, poderoso y con una carrera inigualable a sus espaldas, Jeff Beck es ese tipo que todos los que tocamos la eléctrica hemos soñado ser en alguna ocasión.
