Spirit fue una banda californiana asociada al rock y la psicodelia (como muchas bandas californianas de finales de los 60) aunque su sonido tenía muchas otras influencias. La banda la formaron inicialmente Randy California guitarra y voz, Mark Andes al bajo, Jay Ferguson percusión y voces, Ed Cassidy a la batería y John Locke a los teclados. 

Hace unos años volvieron a tener mucha notoriedad en la prensa especializada por el presunto plagio de la canción Taurus por parte de Led Zeppelin en su canción Stairway to Heaven, que finalmente y tras largos litigios no se consideró plagio por parte de la banda británica.

Hubo una época en los 90 en la que Lenny Kravitz se convirtió en uno de los jefes del cotarro. Publicaba auténticos temazos, tenía una banda sensacional y volvió a colocar el rock en la cúspide de la cadena musical. 

Desde su debut con Let Love Rule y, sobre todo, tras la publicación de los dos siguientes álbumes Mama Said y Are You Gonna Go My Way se convirtió en una estrella a nivel mundial.

El disco Are You Gonna Go My Way se grabó con aparatos analógicos y prácticamente en directo, tal y como hacían muchas bandas en los 70, y la verdad es que el sonido es setentero a más no poder. La primera vez que lo escuché pensaba que podía ser Led Zeppelin, Jimi hendrix o alguien así.
