Temazo vital y optimista de ese disco perfecto que es el Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band de los (afortunadamente) omnipresentes The Beatles.

La genial intro, las maravillosas voces, la tambura de Harrison y la inconfundible batería de Richard Starkey (más conocido como Ringo Starr) hacen que este inclasificable tema tenga una energía apabullante.

Esta sensación se ve acrecentada al escucharla en el disco pues está situada después de la lisérgica Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.

Cocaine - JJ Cale

JJ Cale era un músico que podía haber sido mucho más conocido de lo que fue, pero él mismo se empeñó en pasar un tanto desapercibido.

Asociado al sonido Tulsa (mezcla de estilos netamente americanos) disfrutó de cierta fama y notoriedad cuando Eric Clapton versionó algunos de sus temas como After Midnight en su álbum debut o, posteriormente, este Cocaine.

Escuchando los temas de JJ Cale podemos suponer porque Eric Clapton o Mark Knopfler parecen músicos americanos cuando son británicos; inglés el primero y escocés el segundo.

Aunque la asociación de Eric Clapton con el sonido Tulsa es más obvia por las versiones y el sonido de su banda de esa época (años 70), en el caso de Knopfler no hay más que escuchar algunas de sus canciones para ver que existe una gran influencia del músico americano en el líder de Dire Straits, al menos en sus primeros discos.

Waterloo Sunset - The Kinks

Compuesta por Ray Davies este éxito de The Kinks del año 1967 habla sobre una pareja (ficticia, según comenta el autor) que pasea por el Thamesis y la estación de Waterloo. 

Según comentaba Ray en alguna entrevista la canción iba a titularse Liverpool Sunset, pues ésta era su ciudad preferida, pero finalmente la vinculó con sus vivencias londinenses, lugar donde nació y vivió.

Mr. Blue Sky - Electric Light Orchestra

Según leí hace tiempo, esta canción fue elegida como la más optimista de una selección entre miles, o algo así...El caso es que es un temazo y aunque lo han quemado un poco en las radios generalistas que escuchan muchos viejóvenes (Kiss fm y similares) la incluyo porque ha sido nuevamente masterizada siguiendo las indicaciones de Jeff Lyne, líder, compositor y voz principal y han hecho un nuevo vídeo. 

Por lo que escucho, es evidente las masterización (fijaos en el solo de guitarra) y han eliminado la coda del tema original.

Desconozco quién tuvo la genial idea, pero es indudable que actualizar temas antiguos con vídeos modernos es adaptarse a los tiempos: no requiere mucha inversión, es un valor seguro y actualiza al artista para nuevas generaciones; a juzgar por el número de visualizaciones se puede decir que funciona bastante bien.

Un tema dedicado a un modelo de coche compuesto por un tal Mack Rice que tiene sólo otro tema conocido. Pues vale.

Pero si llega Wilson Pickett con su voz y con los músicos de Atlantic y hace esta versión pues ya es otra cosa.

Según parece, el enorme estudio que se ve en el vídeo está en la propia casa de Daryl Hall, leyenda del pop y mitad de Hall & Oates. Ese es el sueño de cualquier músico; ese es mi sueño. Llamas a tus colegas, vienen y tocáis. Maravilloso.

Esta es una versión más rockera de uno de los clásicos de Hall & Oates con la colaboración de la potente voz de Cee Lo Green.

21st Century Schizoid Man - King Crimson

Me acabo de enterar del fallecimiento de Ian McDonald, uno de los fundadores de King Crimson, así que no me queda otra que dedicarle una entrada.

Con este contundente tema habría el disco que cambió la historia del rock progresivo.
